Major operation done under WB Swastho Sathi Scheme by Mission Hospital, Durgapur
Durgapur :: 12 years old child named Tutai from Siuri, suffered a severe head injury, as a thin edged metal object cut in about 6 inches into the left side of his forehead with fractured skull bones into the brain. This was happen when he was riding a bike with her aunt. They fell down after collision with a mechanised rickshaw. The aunt suffered moderate injuries. The alert family did not waste any time, and immediately rushed Tutai to The Mission Hospital. By this time, he had lost a lot of blood, the brain had begun to swell and pour out through the open wound dangerously.

Taken to the emergency, the gravity of the situation was evident. The dedicated emergency medical care team of The Mission Hospital, alert for such crisis 24*7, immediately started resuscitation. He was assessed by Neurosurgeon Dr. Satyajit Das, who has been dealing with such head injury cases for over seven years in Durgapur. The challenges were manifold. The primary objectives being to control the brain swelling, stop blood loss, clear the debris that had entered the brain, to slow down the establishment and spread of potentially fatal brain infection. The secondary challenges were to preserve important areas of the brain as the injury was on the left side, which is the dominant brain hemisphere, containing speech and other important functions, stop convulsions and delayed brain injury.
A lot depended on the Neuro-anesthetist, Dr. Nibedita Sahu, who had to look out for dangers like seizures, brain herniation and blood loss. After surgery, it fell upon the paediatric intensivist team including Dr.Krishanu Mondal and Dr. Joshi Anand Kerketta to see to the stormy post-operative period, where a constant surveillance was required to keep a myriad of possible mishaps at bay. After spending 3 days in ventilator, Tutai started breathing well and was gradually taken off supports. His speech is also slowly improving with time. Allowed to spend time with his mother and interact with other children, watch TV, eat chocolates and play in the children’s ward play area, he is happy now and waiting to go home after his stitches are removed. One thing to be notice that with this successful of mojor operation by this Hospital the entire cost should cover by the West Bengal Swastho Sathi Medical Scheme without any difficulties.
