BE, Kolkata ::: The Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) is a renowned research institute located in Chennai, India. It is dedicated to conducting scientific research on diabetes and related complications. The foundation was established in 1996 by Dr. V. Mohan, a leading diabetologist in India.
Recently the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the country’s apex body for medical research, has honored this Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) with the prestigious designation of Collaborating Centre of Excellence (CCOE). This recognition highlights MDRF’s outstanding contributions to biomedical research, particularly in the field of diabetes care and management. MDRF, the research arm of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre in Chennai, was selected as one of only 20 centers nationwide for this honor. This recognition follows MDRF’s previous global acknowledgment by the World Health Organization (WHO) for its pioneering work in diabetes research.
Dr. V. Mohan, Chairman of MDRF, and Dr. R. M. Anjana, President of MDRF, jointly stated, “We are deeply honored to receive this recognition from ICMR. It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team of scientists and staff, whose research continues to make significant strides in diabetes care. Our long-standing collaboration with ICMR, spanning more than a decade, has enabled us to drive impactful research in diabetes. We are confident that this partnership will continue to yield transformative results as we work towards tackling the growing diabetes burden and improving public health outcomes in India and globally.”
Founded in 1996, MDRF has grown to become one of Asia’s largest and most respected diabetes research institutions. The foundation has published over 1,770 research papers and boasts a team of more than 20 scientists specializing in diverse fields such as diabetes epidemiology, precision medicine, genomics, and nutrition. MDRF has also served as the national coordinating center for the ICMR-led INDIAB study, one of India’s largest and most comprehensive diabetes and non-communicable disease (NCD) epidemiology studies.
The research conducted at MDRF encompasses various aspects of diabetes, including epidemiology, genetics, clinical management, and public health. MDRF plays a crucial role in advancing knowledge about diabetes, improving patient care, and combating the growing burden of diabetes in India and beyond.
